We dreamed of building a church for people who were not used to church life.
Church for them, not yet in church
We dreamed of building a church for people who were not used to church life. A place where the neighbor, colleague and classmate would feel welcome. A church that builds bridges instead of digging ditches. Where the gospel call for everyone to just “come” would replace talk of “insiders” and “outsiders.” We wanted to be closer to our city and be relevant to people's everyday lives.
Naturally Supernatural
We dreamed of seeing God's supernatural power transform people—everywhere and through ordinary Christian people.
We longed for deep encounters with God without becoming strange. We wanted God's power to be tangible and present in our everyday lives.
Fun to be a part of
The journey took many cups of coffee to build relationships and friendships -- and that was an important part of the journey. While we enjoyed each other's company, we talked about a church one didn't feel like going home from. A place full of laughter, love and “coziness.” Our Mission
We dreamed together and arrived at a new reality - and if it has to be said in a few words, it can be summed up in our Mission statement, which reads like this:
“We inspire people to experience God and imitate Jesus.”
We sought to inspire
We found that too much of our church baggage was about how WE wanted things. What WE liked. The main issue had to be about reaching those who did not yet have Christian fellowship and faith. OpenChurch is the dream of a church that seeks to inspire people. We cannot transform, heal or save anyone. But we know who can. To point those who are not yet in the Church to our Father God is our deepest aspiration. To inspire people to open up to God and follow in the footsteps of Jesus is our heavenly call. To do so, an OpenChurch is willing to risk doing new and untested things. We feel a calling to change our ways of sharing the Gospel in order to preserve the freshness and power of our core faith. A church that does not change its ways of engaging in an ever-changing world is in fact changing its message to one that is perceived as irrelevant. Therefore, no one needs to pretend anything to be part of an OpenChurch. There are no standards before you can attend church. We trust in the grace and power of God to bring about a change in people's lives.
Come as you are, but don't stay the same. Allow God to touch your life. We do not accept sin in our lives by allowing God's grace to change us — even when it takes time.As you struggle with faith and identity — we invite you to be part of the community of an OpenChurch. Church is the best place for flawed people to meet God.
It started in Denmark
From Herning, the dream of a missional church for “real people” leads to church plantings in Ndola, ZA, Copenhagen, DK - and who knows where else. You can also become a part of history. His story. Let us serve God together, with all that we have.
